At Kinder Learning Centres we realize the importance for rest time for our little ones. Their busy little minds need to rest and recharge for new learning experiences in the afternoon. CCEYA requires us to provide the children with a minimum of 2 hours of rest per day in a comfortable quiet area. Communication with parents is very important and a key fundament for sleep success.
- Each child will have his/her own crib or cot for nap time. (cots/cribs are labelled with the child’s name)
- Each child’s Sleep Preferences will be recorded in Kindertales. This will indicate for each child their sleep preference. Example if they like to be rocked, patted on the back, head rubbed, singing etc. it will also indicate whether that child has a soother, blanket, stuffed animal etc. Information will be up dated as required and changes happen.
- Sleeping schedules are done respecting the parent’s and staff opinion. At Kinder Learning Centres we work along side the parent to develop sleep plans that suit the need for each child.
- Children’s sleep preferences are discussed with the parents during the registration process. The parent will give verbal information to their child’s teacher and a sleep schedule will be designed for their child that suits both the daycare and the parents.
- All classrooms have a Sleep Floor Plan posted on the wall for viewing.
Children under 12 months
- Please note, under the Joint Statement of Safe Sleep(ss.33.1) that we must place all children under 12 months of age to sleep on their backs. This is not negotiable.
- Children will be observed with direct visual checks every 15mins or more often during nap times. Daily visual charts are posted in the classroom for staff and parents to view.
- Parents must be advised upon registration about the Joint Statement of Safe Sleep by the Supervisor.
- Other specific sleep arrangements must be approved by a professional therapist or Doctor. Any sleep transitions will be reviewed with parents prior to starting.
Toddlers and Preschool
- Average sleep time daily for Toddler is 11:30-1:30
- Average sleep time daily for Preschool is 12:30-2:30
- By the time the children are ready for our Toddler and Preschool programs they have already had the transition from a crib to a cot and this has been discussed with the parent.
- There is no separate sleep rooms for the Toddlers or Preschool. The staff simply push the furniture and equipment to the side to set the cots for nap time.
- Cots are placed 18 inches apart from one another.
- Staff ratios are decreased to 2/3 ratios during nap time. Children are observed at all times, teachers walk around the cots and visually observe each child during rest time. Visual checks are completed every 30 mins.
- Individual checks are completed for each child to ensure their comfort. Any ill health concerns are documented in log book and parents are notified if any concerns arise.
Visual Checks and Stress Indicators
- When our staff are doing their visual checks they are looking to see if the child is resting comfortably without stress.
- Some indicators of a stressful sleep could be: restlessness, coughing, fever, vomiting, excessive sweating, crying, shortness of breath, discolouration and any other unusual behaviours.
- When these above signs are noted they are documented in the daily log book and parents are contacted if needed. If parents are not contacted immediately then the parent will be advised upon pick up by the teachers.
