Hiring Process:

At Kinder we realize that everyone has unique qualities and various ranges of education, skill and experience. When we hire for a position we look at several important areas,

  1. Qualifications (Level of education)

  2. Experience working with children

  3. Experience working in a License Daycare

  4. Personality, ambition to learn and upgrade their level of education and skill

After the initial interview we ask the potential employee to come back in for a second interview, which involves them volunteering in the classroom for approximately 2 hours or more if needed. This gives the individual and Kinder the opportunity to see if the position fits the person.

To complete the hiring, we need to complete the following:

  • Complete a staff file, collecting records of their RECE number, ensure that they are in good standing with the college of ECE’s, CPR Level C, Standard First Aid, up to date immunizations, payroll forms.

  • Vulnerable sector check (less than 6 months old) or offence declaration as required under the Regulation no later than 15 days after the anniversary date of the previous VSC or OD

  • All new employees, volunteers and students must read all centre policies and sign off prior to their first day in the classroom. Annually after that or as needed

  • New employees will have shadow training with a trained RECE in the classroom. Number of shadow days are between 2-5 days at the supervisor’s discretion

  • Continuous monitoring by supervisor to ensure the new employee is learning/growing within their new position

What is Expected from a New Employee:

  1. Complete staff file requirements as stated above

  2. Read and comply with Centre Policies and sign off annually

  3. Keep certifications up to date RECE, CPR/First Aid, immunizations

  4. Read and sign off of Employee Handbook

  5. Be respectful to other employees and the children and their families

Staff Development

At Kinder we believe that encouraging and guiding your employees to reach a new level of learning and development not only gives them a higher level of education but gives them personal growth.

The following community resources are available for employees for additional tools/resources:

  • Family Space

  • Quinte Health Care

  • Hastings County Health Unit

  • Hastings County Child Services

  • Belleville Library

  • Local Supervisor Meetings

  • Community and Practice sessions

It is important that employees have ongoing professional learning opportunities. At Kinder we continue to look for seminars, workshops and courses to help each individual reflect about pedagogy and daily practices. When an learning opportunity arises we’ll send out and email to staff to be able to participate. We also encourage employees to do their research and look for opportunities for upcoming events. If possible we try to support the cost financially or equally share a split in fees and cost to make it feesable for employees to attend.

The Ministry of Education’s How Does Learning Happen? provides a range of resources to support professional learning for individuals, for teams and with others in the community.

Mandatory Development

  • It is the employee’s responsibility to keep a valid CPR/First Aid. If there are a few other employees that need to do a recertification at the same time, often it is possible to do it in a group setting. However, it is the employee’s responsibility to make sure it does not expire.

  • How Does Learning Happen seminars and courses when available

  • Monthly Staff Meetings

  • Each staff must complete 2 professional development courses a year related to childcare and provide feedback on the course.
