Smoking / Vaping (1 min read)

In accordance with the Smoke Free Ontario Act, smoking tobacco or holding any vaping product is strictly prohibited in all day nurseries and private home child care settings. Under the Day Nurseries Act, all staff, volunteers, students, parents and visitors are advised that smoking/vaping is prohibited on centre premises. These premises include the playground, the back of the centre, the front of the centre and all parking areas on centre premises (including inside any vehicles parked on centre premises), or any where within eyesight
of the centre. Staff, volunteers, students, parents and visitors must wash their hands if entering the centre after smoking/vaping.

Staff are advised of this policy at time of hire, and annually there after. All centres have clearly posted signs indicating their adherence to the smoke/vape free policy. It is expected that all staff, volunteers, students, parents and visitors will comply with this policy. The only exemption of this policy would be if any staff, parent or volunteer is participating in a religious or spiritual ceremony requiring them to use tobacco. Compliance is expected, irrespective of whether the children are present or not.

Failure to comply with these regulations as set out by the Day Nurseries Act and Kinder Learning Centre is a contravention of the Smoke Free Ontario Act.

  • Initial non compliance by an employee will result in a written warning. Subsequent non compliance by an employee will result in termination.
  • Any parent found in non compliance with the above policy will first be given a written warning, followed by notice of termination of their child care agreement with the centre for any subsequent contravention.
